Reading a GAA score
What does a score like 1-12 mean in Gaelic football or hurling?
GAA scores are written goals first, then points. 1-12 means one goal and twelve points. A goal is worth three points, so the total is 3 + 12 = 15, often printed in brackets: 1-12 (15).
The total is what wins. That is why the scoreline can mislead at a glance: 3-8 (17) loses to 1-15 (18), and 0-16 beats 2-9 (15). Goals are worth more, but a team kicking points all afternoon can still come out ahead.
Since 2025, Gaelic football has a 2-point score for kicks over the bar from on or outside the 40 m arc. Those count as two in the points column, so 0-10 might be six ordinary points and two 2-pointers. The arithmetic does not change: goals times three, plus the points.
Hurling and camogie write their scores the same way. In Score All every scoreboard, the TV board and the stream overlay show the goals, the points and the total together, so nobody has to do the sum.
