How netball scoring works

Netball scoring is one point a goal, with two well-known variations: Super Netball's two-point super shot and Fast5's long goals and power plays.

Four quarters

Fifteen minutes each at senior level, with short breaks between quarters and a longer one at half time. Junior and social games are often shorter, and some play two halves.

Goals

Only the goal shooter and goal attack may score, and only from inside the shooting circle. Every goal is one point, and the center pass then goes to the other team.

The super shot

In Super Netball, a goal from the outer power zone of the circle in the last five minutes of a quarter is worth two points.

Fast5

A shorter format with four 6-minute quarters and five players a side. Goals from the outer circle count two, and in a team's nominated power play quarter its goals count double.

Draws and extra time

League games may end level. In a knockout, a tie plays two 7-minute halves of extra time, and if still level play continues until one team leads by two goals.

What Score All does with these rules

Quarters and the clock

Four 15-minute quarters at senior level, shorter for juniors, Fast5 and social games. Start and pause the clock from the phone; it runs on the server, so a locked phone does not lose time.

Goals

Only the goal shooter and goal attack may score, from inside the shooting circle, and every goal is one point. Tap the team that scored. The center pass then goes to the other team, which the umpire calls, not the scoreboard.

Super shots and Fast5

Switch the scoring buttons to Super shot and a +2 button appears for goals from the power zone in the last five minutes of a quarter. Fast5 adds long goals worth 2, and power play goals worth double (2 and 4).

Draws and extra time

League games can end level. In a knockout, a tie plays two 7-minute halves of extra time (scored here as one 14-minute overtime), and if it is still level play goes on with no clock until one team is two goals ahead.

Netball scoring FAQ

How many points is a goal in netball?

One, unless your competition plays super shots (two points from the power zone late in each quarter) or Fast5 long goals.

Can a netball game end in a draw?

Yes, in league play. Knockout games go to extra time and then play on to a two-goal lead.

How is netball scored?

One point for every goal, scored from inside the shooting circle by the goal shooter or goal attack. The team with more goals after four quarters wins.

What is a super shot in netball?

A goal worth two points from the outer power zone of the circle, allowed in the last five minutes of each quarter in Super Netball. It is a setting here.

What happens if a netball game is tied?

In a league it stands as a draw. In a knockout there are two 7-minute halves of extra time, then play continues until one team leads by two goals. Both are settings.
