How Wiffle ball scoring works

Wiffle ball scoring is baseball scoring with fewer players, which is why most games use ghost runners instead of real ones.

Runs, outs and innings

A run scores when a runner gets home. Games are commonly 3 to 6 innings, with 3 outs a side or 2 in quick games.

Ghost runners

With no one to run the bases, hits are judged by where the ball lands: a single, double, triple or home run. The batter takes that base, and every ghost runner on base moves up the same number of bases.

Walks

A walk puts the batter on first and pushes along only the runners who are forced, so a walk with the bases loaded scores one.

Strikes and balls

Pitched games use a count: three strikes is an out (two in fast games) and four balls a walk.

Mercy and extra innings

A mercy rule ends a lopsided game after a set inning, and a tie can go to extra innings with a runner starting on second.

What Score All does with these rules

Ghost runners

With no baserunning, hits are called by where the ball lands. Tap Single, Double, Triple or Home run: the batter takes that base, every ghost runner moves up the same number of bases, and runners who get home score.

Walks

A walk puts the batter on first and moves up only the runners who are forced. With balls counted, the fourth ball does it for you.

Outs and innings

Backyard games are often 3 to 6 innings with 3 outs, quick games 2 outs. Three outs (or two) end the half and clear the bases.

Strikes, balls and mercy

Count strikes and balls if you pitch to a count: 3 strikes or 2 for a short game. A mercy rule ends a lopsided game after a set inning.

Playing with real runners

If you do run the bases, switch ghost runners off and tap +1 run as each runner crosses the plate.
