How volleyball scoring works
Volleyball is rally scoring throughout, but the last set is shorter than the rest, which is the detail that catches out a scorer working from memory.
Sets to 25, decider to 15
The first four sets go to 25 points, win by two, with no upper cap. A deciding fifth set goes to 15, also win by two. Matches are best of five, or best of three in many leagues.
Rally scoring
Every rally scores, regardless of who served. Before 1999 only the serving team could score, which is why old volleyball matches ran so long.
Beach volleyball
Beach is best of three, sets to 21 with a deciding set to 15, and teams switch ends every seven points (five in the deciding set) to keep wind and sun fair.
Changing ends
Teams change ends after each set, and in the deciding set when one team reaches 8 points.
