How Uno scoring works
Uno is a shedding game: the first player to play every card wins the round and scores the card points left in the other players' hands, and the first to 500 points wins the game.
The deck and the deal
The deck has 108 cards: number cards 0 to 9 in four colors, Draw Two, Reverse and Skip cards in each color, and Wild and Wild Draw Four cards. Each player is dealt seven cards, the top of the deck starts the discard pile, and the deal passes to the left after every round.
A turn
Match the top of the discard pile by color, number or symbol, or play a Wild. A player who cannot play draws a card. Action cards change the play: Skip misses the next player, Reverse changes direction, Draw Two makes the next player draw two and miss their turn, and Wild Draw Four lets you choose the color while the next player draws four.
Saying "Uno"
A player down to one card must say "Uno". Caught without saying it before the next player starts their turn, they draw two cards as a penalty.
Scoring a round
When a player plays their last card, the round ends. That player scores the cards left in every other hand: number cards at face value, Draw Two, Reverse and Skip 20 points each, Wild and Wild Draw Four 50 each.
Winning
The first player to reach 500 points wins. The instructions also describe keeping a running total of the points each player is caught holding instead: when anyone reaches 500, the player with the lowest total wins.
Partners and shorter games
Four players can play as two partnerships seated across from each other; the team of the player who goes out scores the cards in the opponents' hands. Many families play to 250, or for a set number of rounds with the best total winning.
What Score All does with these rules
Who went out, and what is left
When a player plays their last card the round is over. Tick that player and enter the points left in everyone else's hand: number cards at face value, Draw Two, Reverse and Skip 20 each, Wild and Wild Draw Four 50 each.
The rulebook way: winner takes the points
The player who went out scores the total of everyone else's cards, and the first to 500 wins. The sheet adds it up, so nobody has to do the arithmetic with a pile of cards in front of them.
Lowest total wins instead
The other way in the instructions keeps a running total of the points each player is caught with. When anyone reaches 500, the lowest total wins. Switch the scoring once and the standings sort lowest first.
A set number of rounds, or partners
Play five or ten rounds and let the best total win, which suits a family night with a bedtime. Partners sit across from each other, and the team of the player who went out scores the opponents' cards.
