How ultimate frisbee scoring works
Ultimate is self-refereed, so the scoreboard is a shared responsibility rather than an official position. The rules that matter for scoring are the target, the half and the cap.
Scoring and the target
A goal is one point, scored by catching the disc in the end zone. Games commonly go to 15 in USA Ultimate play, with 13 or 11 used for shorter formats.
Halftime
Halftime is at half the target, so a game to 15 breaks at 8. Teams swap ends.
Soft cap and hard cap
When time runs short, a soft cap raises the target to the current leading score plus one or two. A hard cap ends the game at the end of the current point, whoever is ahead. Both keep tournaments on schedule.
The pull
Each point starts with a pull from the scoring team, similar to a kickoff, so possession alternates naturally.
