How pickleball scoring works
Pickleball scoring confuses newcomers because the score is three numbers and only the serving side can score. Rally scoring, where every rally is a point, is spreading fast but traditional side-out is still the tournament standard.
The three-number call
In doubles you call your score, their score, then the server number: "seven, five, two" means your side has seven, theirs has five, and you are the second server. Singles drops the third number. Score All shows all three and can read them out loud.
Why a game starts at 0-0-2
The side that serves first in a game only gets one server, not two, so the game opens at 0-0-2. Without this the first serving team would get an unfair extra turn. After that fault the serve goes straight to the other team.
Server 1, server 2 and side out
Each side gets two servers. When the first server faults, their partner serves. When the second faults, it is a side out and the serve crosses. That is why nothing changes on the scoreboard when your side loses a rally: only the server number moves.
Where you stand: the even and odd rule
Your starting server serves from the right when your team score is even, and from the left when it is odd. That single rule is what tells you, mid-game, which player should be serving and from where. The console draws the boxes so nobody has to reconstruct it.
Rally scoring and the freeze
In rally scoring a point is scored on every rally, which makes games predictable in length. The freeze rule, used in MLP, means a team on game point can only convert while serving. Both are options.
Games and match length
Games go to 11 win by two in most play, 15 or 21 in some tournament formats, and a match is usually best of three.
What Score All does with these rules
Traditional side-out scoring
Only the serving team can score. The score is called as three numbers: serving team, receiving team, server number (for example 7-5-2). Games go to 11, win by 2. Score All shows all three numbers and speaks them aloud if you want.
0-0-2 and the second server
The first serving team of every game starts with only one server, so the game opens at 0-0-2. After a fault the serve passes to the partner (server 2), and on the next fault to the other team. The Fault button handles all of this.
Rally scoring and the freeze
Rally scoring gives a point on every rally. The "freeze" house rule (used in MLP) means a team at game point can only win the game while serving. Both are options when you create the match.
Court positions (the anchor rule)
In doubles your starting server stands on the right whenever your score is even and on the left when it is odd. The console shows each player’s box so nobody argues about who serves from where.
Pickleball scoring FAQ
What does 0-0-2 mean in pickleball?
It is the opening call of a game: nobody has scored, and the first serving team is on its second server, because that team only gets one server in its first turn.
Can you score on the other team's serve?
Not in traditional side-out scoring. Winning a rally on their serve wins you the serve, not a point. In rally scoring you do score.
How do you know which side to serve from?
If your team score is even, the starting server serves from the right; if it is odd, from the left. That is the whole rule.
What is the freeze rule?
A rally-scoring rule where a team at game point can only win the game while serving. It stops games ending on a receiving point.
What is the best free pickleball scoring app?
Score All scores pickleball singles and doubles for free, with side-out or rally scoring, the 0-0-2 start, server tracking and a shareable live scoreboard. It runs in the browser on any phone.
Does the app call out the pickleball score?
